BENTON, Ark. (KTHV) - Speeding might be a small concern for some travelers, but for the Benton Police Department, it's a problem that needs to be handled.

The Benton Police Department is constantly creating new ways to ensure the safety of those they were hired to protect. A new initiative they are conducting is â€œNØ Need to Speed.” Throughout the month of March, Benton officers will be out in full force to make sure motorists are maintaining the appropriate speed limits, especially within school zones.

Not only will officers be raising awareness to speeding in a school zones, but they also want to make it known that it is illegal to use a cell phone while passing a school building. According to state law (House Bill 1049), it is illegal for a driver of a motor vehicle to use a handheld wireless telephone while passing a school zone during school hours and when children are present.

The Benton Police Department said the main goal is not to write more citations. Instead, they hope to encourage people to slow down so they make it their destinations safely.

To report suspicious driving and/or accidents, call the Benton Police Department at (501) 778-1171 or (501) 315-TIPS.
