Benton PD to hand out gun safety locks
BENTON, Ark. (KTHV) - Amid all of the crimes being committed involving guns in our society today, one police department is trying to make a difference.
Through the help of the Project ChildSafe Program and the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the Benton Police Department will be distributing free gun safety locks to residents in the area.
Fatal firearms accidents in all age groups dropped by 22 percent between 2000 and 2010, according to the National Safety Council. Chief Kirk Lane said the BNPD has been a member of the Project ChildSafe Program for a number of years and attributes the decrease of firearm fatalities to the education of firearm safety to citizens along with the increase of gun safety locks being provided to gun owners.
