Benton and Bryant preparing for the annual Salt Bowl

BRYANT, Ark. (KTHV) - The sound of football--the band, the cheers and of course the rivalry. Kenneth Bates says, "It's like a rivalry that's been going on since 1976."

Saline County is a county divided. "It's been pretty intense for a lot of years," Bates continues. Benton versus Bryant. They will come head to head on Friday in the annual Salt Bowl in one of the largest games in the state. Just three days before the big game both cities come together for the Saline County Fair Parade and Bryant Pep Rally. But of course, everyone made it clear as to which team they are rooting for.

Colson Billingsley says, "When they come out, they're gonna beat Benton." Ten-year-old Colson Billingsley says he bleeds blue. But that wasn't always the case for his dad. Carlton Billingsley explains, "I was born and raised in Benton. Played for the Benton panthers in high school and since have moved over to Bryant."

Regardless of the side you are on, both Bryant and Benton are working together for the good of their community. A tee-shirt Bates wears says it all, "two teams one dream".

Students are donating to the Rice Depot, holding a blood drive and raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Bates says, "Football is football but community is what really makes it the best of the rivalry." Come Friday, there can only be one winner on the field. But both of these teams will go down as champions in their communities.

The game will be played at War Memorial Stadium on Friday afternoon. Gates will open at 5:30.
