Teacher to be charged with sexual assault of 17-year-old

BRYANT, Ark. (KTHV) - A recently resigned teacher in Saline County is to be charged with sexual assault.

It is a place parents send their children to learn but police say one Bryant High School teacher took her relationship with a student too far.

"He told them of four occasions, four encounters he had with her at the Bryant parking lot, high school parking lot in her car," says Sgt. Todd Crowson with the Bryant Police Department.

He says on Monday school resource officers alerted them to a possible sexual assault involving 9th grade English teacher 31-year-old Courtney Speer and a 17-year-old student. Officers interviewed the student and say he told them the two had sex on several occasions, both on campus and at Speer's home in Benton. That same day, Speer resigned and now faces at least four counts of sexual assault in Bryant and two counts in Benton.

"She was actually scheduled to come in and speak with the investigators today. She did retain an attorney and the attorney did contact the investigators and advise them that he would have her there first thing in the morning to turn herself in," says Sgt. Crowson.

Police say they don't know if more students are involved but Lt. Kevin Russell with Benton Police says more charges could be coming from both departments.

"To hear this about a teacher who is in a position of trust over students, it is not just from a law enforcement perspective but from a parent's perspective, it is kind of disheartening," says Lt. Russell.

Police say Speer is set to turn herself in at the Saline County jail at 9 am Wednesday morning.

Today's THV did reach out to the Bryant School District about this incident. They told us it is a personnel matter and declined to comment.

In Arkansas, Sexual Assault is a Class-A Felony and carries a sentence of 6-30 years in prison.
