APSRC Launches Achieving By Changing Initiative

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Arkansas Public School Resource Center is pleased to announce the launch of its new pilot initiative, Achieving By Changing.  Also known as ABC, Achieving By Changing is a systematic approach to implementing the Common Core State Standards.

ABC is a three year initiative designed to support public schools as they transition to the Common Core State Standards.  The focus of ABC is to change classroom practice to prepare our teachers to meet the rigorous standards of the Common Core.  All strategies that will be implemented through ABC are research-based.  Open to any public school district that is a member of APSRC, ABC is a collaborative network of schools who will share their learning across the ABC partnership.

“In order to meet continually increasing accountability standards, districts must change their approach,” said APSRC Executive Director Scott Smith.  ABC will develop a curriculum of Common Core lesson plans, develop instructional strategies, improve data literacy, build embedded instructional skills, empower active participation by teachers and improve achievement in the classrooms.

The initiative is funded with a grant from the Walton Family Foundation.  In addition to the grant, a cost per campus is assessed to support the overall initiative.  Through the grant, 26 schools were chosen to be pilot schools in the initiative.  Additional schools will be added this fall.

ABC will be implemented through regional hubs.  Each hub is matched with an ABC coach who will facilitate the learning with the region, provide onsite support and monitor each school’s progress.  Hub meetings will begin across the state of Arkansas this week.
