HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Two-time Oaklawn Park leading rider Calvin Borel, winner of three out of the last four Kentucky Derbys, will be recognized both locally and abroad for his riding accomplishments in the coming days.

Friday night Borel joins Philadelphia Phillies pitching ace Cliff Lee, of Benton, Ark., and nine others as 2011 inductees into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame. Borel will take part in a ceremony in Little Rock.

Monday, Borel leaves for the Middle East where he will represent the United States in the Meydan Masters jockey competition February 17-18 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Borel, who has been riding at Oaklawn since the early 90s, earned his first riding title at the Hot Springs track in 1995, ending Hall of Famer Pat Day’s streak of 12 consecutive titles in the process. His second title came in 2001. More recently, Oaklawn has been a stepping stone for two of Borel’s best mounts.

LITTLE ROCK – Half of the 2011 Junior Olympic Shotgun Team is from Arkansas.

Those five also are current or recent members of teams that compete in the Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports Program, created and managed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. The announcement came in late January from USA Shooting, the governing body of Olympic shooting events.

“This is a great honor for student athletes involved in the sport of trap shooting, and is the first stage on the road to achieving an Olympic dream,” said Chuck Woodson, AYSSP coordinator.

LITTLE ROCK — There is probably no gym in the state hotter than the one at Little Rock Central High School. But, on Friday night, the Hornets brought their own kind of heat supplement as they scorched the nets for 12 three-pointers, converted 10 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter and popped out of the sauna with a 60-44 win.

It was a welcome breakthrough for a Bryant team that had played toe-to-toe with most of its league rivals over the previous five games without reward, including Tuesday’s 4-point loss to North Little Rock, one of three teams tied for the 7A/6A-Central Conference lead after Friday’s action.

Often the Hornets had made rushes at the end after falling behind during a scoring drought earlier in the game only to come up short.
