Benton mayor issues stance on trash pickup

From the office of Benton mayor David Mattingly:

I, like the vast majority of the city council, have been receiving emails and phone calls from concerned citizens about the recent announcement by the Saline County Regional Solid Waste Management District (SCRSWMD) regarding mandatory curbside recycling and trash pickup.  The majority of messages received were favorable to recycling, but very troubled by the methods they had been hearing and reading about as to the execution of this program.  I have now talked to all members of the City Council, as well as the City Attorney, regarding the implementation of this program, and we are united in our response as outlined in this letter.

EDITORIAL: Proposed bills would create layer of secrecy

EDITORIAL: Proposed bills would create layer of secrecy

By Tom Larimer

A series of bills was filed in the Arkansas legislature that have the potential to create a layer of government secrecy the likes of which we have not seen since the Freedom of Information Act became law in the mid-1960s.

The bills, filed by Rep. Kim Hammer (R-Benton) would remove publication of public notices from Arkansas newspapers and allow them to be “published” on a government web site operated by the Secretary of State. Proponents of the bill suggest this would result in considerable saving to state government.
